Choosing Between A Wake Boat And A Ski Boat
Watersports are every boater’s favorite way to make the most of a day on the water, but the type of boat used can make all the difference. So how do you know which of the two primary watersports models—wake boats and ski boats—is right for you? We here at Roger’s Performance Marine know a thing or two about boating, so we’ve put together a brief guide on whether you’ll prefer a wake boat or a ski boat. To learn more, or to see the boats we have for sale, contact our stores in Centerville and Hurricane, Utah, today!
What Are Ski Boats?
A ski boat is designed specifically for water skiing, from trick to jump to slalom skiing. Their engines are in the middle of the boat with a direct-drive transmission to allow for quick acceleration and a fairly flat wake behind. Some recent models utilize a V-drive transmission to decrease the size of the wake further. These also move slightly slower, allowing the skiers to perform plenty of stunts.
Ski boats don’t tend to be roomy, so they can’t accommodate many passengers or gear.
What Are Wake Boats?
Unlike skiing, wakeboarding or wakesurfing requires a large wake, which watersports enthusiasts then ride, jump off, and perform tricks with. To accomplish this, a wake boat’s engine is at the stern, which, combined with ballast, helps displace more water for a larger wake.
V-drive inboard engines are increasingly popular with wakeboarders, and built-in adjustable ballast systems make it easier to create the exact wake you’re looking for. These boats tend to have more room on deck for passengers and gear.
Which Do I Choose?
It’s important to note that you can technically use either kind of boat for both water skiing and wakeboarding. Wake boats, since they’re roomier, are often grabbed by water skiers for the convenience, and they just minimize the wake when they can. Wakeboarders might struggle more with a ski boat’s low wakes, but it’s still possible to get some good jumps in.
However, your main considerations should be:
- Which sport do I prefer?
- How many people will I be bringing with me?
Wakeboarders and people who want to bring a lot of friends or family on their ride should aim for a wake boat, while water skiers and people who prefer smaller parties should go for a ski boat. If you’re hoping to do a bit of both, a V-drive wake boat is probably your best option.
