As you care for your boat, you may encounter some issues that are more challenging to fix than others. One common problem is the growth of mold or mildew, particularly on vinyl seats. Because boats spend so much time in and around water, the high humidity makes your vessel a perfect environment for these substances to grow. Here’s how to clean them up so that your passengers can always sit on clean seats.

Gather Supplies

You’ll want to assemble your necessary supplies before you start to save time. You’re going to need the following items:

  • Sponges.
  • Soft-bristle scrubbing brush.
  • Microfiber cloths.
  • Water.
  • Vinyl sealant.
  • Cleaning spray.
  • Magic erasers.
  • Paper towels.

Spray the Cleaner and Start Scrubbing

Spray the cleaner liberally onto your dirty vinyl and let it spread out into all the cracks. After about five minutes, you can use your soft-bristle brush to scrub the stains gently. Avoid going too hard so you don’t scuff your vinyl.

Wipe Down and Rinse Off

Once you’ve scrubbed as much as you can, use wet microfiber cloths or damp sponges to wipe off the cleaner. If you’ve still got some stains, a Magic Eraser may help remove them.

Seal the Vinyl

A final step that helps prevent the growth of future mildew is to spray a vinyl sealant onto your boat seats to coat them. An added bonus is that your vinyl will also gleam like new!
