Is it a stretch to say that the propeller is where the rubber meets the road, in a boat? There’s no question that propeller performance is key to keeping your boat moving, so we suggest that you inspect it regularly and give it a little routine love and attention.

Read our guide to propeller maintenance, and keep us in mind for all your boat needs. Roger’s Performance Marine has three locations to serve you: Centerville, Hurricane, and Big Water, Utah.

Don’t Run Aground

Most propeller damage results from impact with rocks or other obstacles. Make every effort to avoid running aground. One remedy is investing in a depth finder. This useful tool lets you know how shallow the water is so you can avoid hitting the bottom. It will also alert you to obstacles such as rocks or sandbars.

Clean and Lubricate Your Propeller

Simple routine cleaning and lubrication is an essential part of your propeller maintenance and repair routine. Use water and mild detergent to remove any salt or debris that’s accumulated after your outing. Next, wipe each blade with water-repellent lubricant to help protect the propeller from corrosion.

Inspect for Corrosion and Minor Wear

While you’re cleaning the blades, take the time to inspect them carefully. Look for signs of minor wear. If you spot any nicks or abrasions on the face of a propeller blade, sand it down carefully with fine-grit wet/dry paper to remove them. For nicks on the edge of a blade, smooth them down with a mill file. The corrosive power of water can turn tiny scuffs into major cracks, so taking care of these issues when they are small is the way to go.

Check for Cracks and Major Wear

If your inspection turns up anything major such as serious cracks or deformed blades, have it checked out by the pros. Stainless steel propellers can usually be repaired if they are not too severely damaged. Aluminum propellers can’t be repaired, but at least they are cheaper to replace.

With regular inspections and maintenance, you can prolong the lifespan of your boat propeller and get the best performance out of this important element of your boat’s motor.
