Your Guide to Buying Boat Parts
Securing a reliable source of high-quality boat parts that are compatible with your vessel will make maintaining it so much easier. Of course, figuring out which parts are right and which parts are wrong can be tough. That’s why the experts at Roger’s Performance Marine have created this boat part buying guide.
Fluids
Fluids like coolant, engine oil, and transmission fluids might not be boat parts in the traditional sense, but they are an important part of keeping the vessel functioning as it should. Coolant prevents the engine from overheating, oil allows the engine’s parts to glide against each other without causing damage, and transmission fluid does a bit of both. If your boat has an inboard motor, you’ll find a list of compatible fluids in your boat’s owner’s manual. If your boat is equipped with an outboard motor, then check the outboard’s manual.
Light Bulbs
Boat bulbs can last for some time, but every bulb burns out eventually. As you might expect, the owner’s manual can tell you which kinds of light bulb are compatible with your vessel. It’s usually best to keep a few bulbs on hand in case one of them breaks.
Filters
A boat engine’s fuel filter helps to keep the fuel entering the engine as clean as possible, which in turn allows for more efficient engine function. A fuel filter needs to be swapped out every 100 hours of operation. Inspect the fuel filter before the start of each season, even if you haven’t used your boat very much since the last time you replaced it. As always, it’s a good idea to keep a spare around just in case.
Spark Plugs & Fuses
Spark plugs and fuses are very easy to replace, and can be used to resolve a variety of different electrical issues. Keep a few around in case you need them. If you’re not sure which kind of spark plugs or fuses your vessel uses, check your owner’s manual.
